Warning: AI voice-clone “family emergency” calls
Scammers are cloning relatives' voices from short clips to make urgent “I'm in trouble, send money” calls sound real.
Cheap, fast voice-cloning tools let scammers mimic a loved one's voice from just seconds of audio scraped from social media or voicemail. The cloned voice is used in an urgent call — an accident, an arrest, being stranded — demanding money fast and in secret.
The familiarity of the voice plus panic and urgency is designed to bypass your normal caution. Payment is usually requested by gift card, transfer, or crypto.
The defence is simple and powerful: agree a private family “safe word”, and always hang up and call the person back on their known number before acting.
What to do
- Pause — urgency is the tactic
- Hang up and call the person back on their known number
- Use a pre-agreed family safe word to confirm identity
- Never send money or gift cards on the strength of a voice call alone
