Warning: Fraudulent personal loan websites
Fake lending websites advertise fast, low-documentation personal loans, then demand upfront “fees” or sensitive ID documents before any funds are released — which never arrive.
The websites look professional, often copying the branding and layout of real lenders, and promise fast approval for a personal loan with minimal paperwork — appealing to people who have been knocked back elsewhere or need money quickly. After you apply, you are told the loan is approved but that an upfront “insurance”, “processing”, or “release” fee must be paid first.
Once the fee is paid, the loan never materialises, and further fees may be demanded to “fix” a supposed problem with the transfer. The application itself can also be a data-harvesting exercise, collecting identity documents and bank details used for identity theft.
Australia's Scamwatch reports a rise in these fraudulent lending sites and reminds consumers that legitimate lenders never ask for an upfront fee before releasing loan funds, and never require payment by gift card or crypto.
What to do
- Never pay an upfront fee to receive a loan
- Check that a lender holds an Australian Credit Licence before applying
- Search the lender's name plus “scam” or “review” before handing over documents
- Avoid loan sites that guarantee approval regardless of your credit history
