Council Tax Rebate Scam
A scam impersonating a local government authority offering a council tax rebate, discount, or refund, used to steal bank details or an upfront fee.

Local governments in some countries periodically offer genuine council tax rebates, discounts for certain household types, or one-off support payments, and scammers exploit public awareness of these real schemes to run convincing impersonation scams. A cold call, text, or door-to-door visitor claims the household qualifies for a rebate or discount and asks for bank details to 'process the refund', or in the door-to-door version, may claim a fee is needed to file the paperwork.
Some versions of this scam specifically target elderly or single-occupancy households, since single-person council tax discounts are a real and common benefit, making the pretext highly believable. A genuine local authority already holds the account and banking details needed to apply an existing discount or process a refund and will never ask a resident to provide bank details over an unsolicited call, text, or doorstep visit to 'unlock' money the household is already entitled to.
