Influencer shilling involves content creators or social media personalities promoting a token, NFT collection, or DeFi project to their audience in exchange for payment, free tokens, or affiliate commissions, without disclosing this financial relationship. The audience, trusting the influencer, may invest based on the implied personal endorsement.
Many shilled projects have turned out to be rug pulls or honeypot tokens specifically designed to be promoted to retail audiences, after which the team and paid insiders sell into the inflated demand. Influencers sometimes face regulatory scrutiny for undisclosed crypto promotion, but enforcement is inconsistent globally.
Consumers should treat any social media promotion of a specific token or project with scepticism, check whether similar accounts are simultaneously promoting the same project (coordinated shill), and perform independent due diligence rather than relying on personality-based trust. Disclosed #ad or #sponsored tags are a minimum expectation.
