Disability benefit scams exploit the genuinely difficult and often lengthy real application and appeals process for disability support, which many claimants find confusing and stressful. Scammers pose as consultants, advocates, or 'benefits specialists' who guarantee they can get a claim approved, secure a higher award, or unlock a large lump of backdated payments, for an upfront fee or a percentage cut taken before any money is actually paid out. Others simply harvest medical and financial details under the guise of a 'free eligibility assessment'.
A second common form directly impersonates the disability benefits agency itself, calling or texting claimants to say their award is under review and will be stopped unless they 'reverify' personal and banking information immediately. This preys on the genuine fear of losing essential income. Legitimate benefits agencies do not guarantee outcomes, do not charge fees tied to the size of an award, and do not demand reverification of bank details over an unsolicited call or text.
