Fake memorial pages copy the format of legitimate tribute sites, complete with a photo, biography, and guestbook, but are created by scammers rather than family members. They are commonly promoted through social media shares that exploit the emotional pull of a death, particularly after a widely reported tragedy, and may ask visitors to 'light a virtual candle' or 'leave a donation' that actually routes payment to the scammer.
Some fake memorial pages exist primarily to harvest visitor information, requiring an account signup with personal details before allowing guestbook comments, or serving malicious ads and pop-ups disguised as legitimate memorial platform features. Because grieving visitors are emotionally engaged and less likely to scrutinize a website's legitimacy, click-through rates on these malicious elements tend to be unusually high.
Before engaging with an online memorial, especially one encountered through a shared social media link rather than a direct family invitation, it is worth checking whether it is hosted on a well-known, reputable memorial platform and confirming with a known family member that the page is genuine before donating or entering personal information.
