Fake Profile Consistency Tells
Observable inconsistencies in a scammer's online persona that betray its fabricated nature, such as mismatched details, timeline gaps, or conflicting information.

Constructed personas maintained by human operators working from a script contain recurring inconsistencies. Common tells include: the age or background story not matching the apparent age in photos; claims about location that contradict time-zone behaviour (messaging at hours inconsistent with their claimed country); education or career details that fail basic fact-checks; story details that shift subtly between conversations; and an absence of a genuine social media history beyond a recently created profile.
Language tells can also be significant: unusual formality, non-native phrasing patterns inconsistent with claimed origin, or unusual spelling choices. Operators running many targets simultaneously may forget what they have told a particular victim, leading to contradictions about family, history, or stated preferences.
Keeping notes on what an online contact has claimed across a long correspondence — and periodically cross-checking for consistency — can expose fabrication that would otherwise be missed in the emotional flow of conversation.
Examples
- A contact who claims to be from London consistently makes grammatical errors typical of West African English and messages during UK night-time hours.
- A profile created three months ago claims a 20-year career history but has no historical posts, connections, or tagged content.
