Fake verification badge scams target creators and public figures who want the credibility of an official verified badge on a social or creator platform. Scammers advertise a paid service claiming to guarantee verification approval, sometimes claiming insider contacts at the platform, in exchange for an upfront fee. In reality, verification badges are either free through the platform's own application process or offered as a genuine paid subscription tier directly by the platform; unofficial "guaranteed approval" services have no ability to influence the real decision.
Some variants ask the victim to hand over account login credentials so the scammer can "submit the verification application on their behalf," which instead gives the scammer full access to hijack the account. Others simply take payment and never deliver anything, since there is no real service being provided at all.
Creators seeking verification should apply only through the platform's own official application form or paid subscription offering, and should never share account credentials with a third party claiming to expedite the process.
Examples
- A message offers guaranteed verification badge approval for a fee, claiming a special relationship with the platform; no badge is ever granted.
- A creator hands over account credentials to a supposed verification service and finds their account has been taken over shortly after.
