Gamified Job Scam
A task-scam variant that wraps fake work inside an app or dashboard with progress bars, levels, and rewards to make the fraud feel more legitimate.
Also known as: app task scam, level-up job scam

Gamified job scams use the psychological mechanics of mobile games — streaks, leaderboards, missions, and reward milestones — to keep victims engaged and convinced the platform is real. The UI often mimics recognisable gig-economy brands, lending false credibility.
As victims advance through levels they are required to deposit increasing sums to unlock the next tier or to access a 'withdrawal threshold'. The gamification creates a sunk-cost dynamic: victims fear losing accumulated points or bonuses if they stop paying.
These scams are particularly effective against younger victims accustomed to freemium game monetisation. The technical polish of the app or web platform is a deliberate deception tool, not evidence of legitimacy.
Examples
- An app shows a progress bar to 'Level 5 Agent' but requires a $300 crypto top-up to complete the final mission.
- A leaderboard shows the victim near the top, with a pop-up promising a bonus payout that requires a fee to release.
