Genuine grief counseling and bereavement therapy are recognized, valuable forms of support, which makes them an attractive area for fraudulent operators to imitate. A scammer may advertise as a certified grief counselor or trauma coach without any real qualification, targeting recently bereaved people through search ads, social media, or direct outreach to those who have publicly shared their loss, and charge substantial fees for sessions that provide little genuine therapeutic value.
More predatory versions use the counseling relationship itself as a foothold to extract additional money, encouraging the client to purchase expensive supplementary programs, retreats, or 'healing products,' or using the trust built in sessions to solicit investments or loans. Because grief makes people emotionally vulnerable and less likely to challenge an authority figure who appears to be helping them, this exploitation can continue for extended periods.
Before engaging a grief counselor, it is worth verifying licensure with the relevant professional body in the jurisdiction, being cautious of anyone who pushes additional paid products beyond standard counseling, and seeking a second opinion if a counselor begins recommending major financial decisions.
