Legitimate heir hunters, also called probate genealogists, do exist and legally trace missing heirs to unclaimed estates, typically working on a contingency fee taken from assets they successfully recover. A fraudulent version of this business model contacts a target claiming to have located an unclaimed estate connected to them, but requires an upfront research fee, retainer, or subscription payment before revealing which estate is involved or doing any real work.
Some fraudulent operators layer a second deception on top: after collecting the fee, they string the victim along with fabricated progress updates, additional fee requests for 'court filing' or 'international transfer,' and vague promises that the payout is imminent. Others target people who are genuinely due a small inheritance already discoverable through public probate notices, and charge a wildly inflated fee to reveal information the person could have found themselves for free.
Anyone contacted by an heir-hunting firm should ask for the specific deceased person's name and the court or jurisdiction handling the estate, verify that estate exists through the relevant probate registry directly, and be wary of any firm that demands payment before disclosing this basic information.
