Hostage and Ransom Romance Scam
A variant in which the scammer claims to be imprisoned, kidnapped, or held against their will and urgently needs ransom or bail money from the victim.
Also known as: virtual kidnapping romance, detained lover scam, bail money romance scam

In the hostage romance scam, an online romantic interest suddenly claims to be detained, arrested, or kidnapped — often during a planned trip to visit the victim. The scenario is presented with urgency and distress: the scammer (or a third party calling on their behalf) demands an immediate transfer of funds to secure their release, pay a customs fine, post bail, or bribe officials.
Variants include a detained business partner whose goods have been impounded at customs, a traveller robbed and arrested overseas, or a romantic partner held by a criminal gang. The emotional desperation of the scenario, combined with the victim's investment in the relationship, makes rational evaluation very difficult.
Real emergencies involving genuine contacts overseas should always be verified through official channels — embassies, local police, or known family members — before any money is sent.
Examples
- A victim receives a panicked call from someone claiming to be their online partner, saying they have been arrested at the airport and need bail money transferred urgently.
- An online romantic interest says they were robbed and detained on the way to visit the victim, and needs emergency funds wired to a local contact.
