Money Mule Recruitment
The process by which scammers recruit individuals to transfer or launder criminal proceeds through their bank accounts in exchange for a commission.
Also known as: money mule, account money mule, unwitting money mule

Money mules are people who transfer illegally obtained money on behalf of criminals, often keeping a small percentage as payment. Recruitment happens through fake job ads promising easy work-from-home income, romance relationships that transition to requests for financial help, or targeted messages offering commission for receiving and forwarding payments.
Many mules are unaware they are committing a crime; they believe they are doing legitimate work for a foreign employer or helping a romantic partner. However, acting as a money mule is illegal in most jurisdictions regardless of knowledge of the criminal origin, and participants risk criminal prosecution and a permanent banking record that can prevent future account openings.
Red flags include job offers that pay commission purely for receiving and forwarding money, requests to use personal bank accounts for business payments, and anything requiring you to send money via cryptocurrency or wire transfer on behalf of someone else.
Examples
- A job ad for a financial processing assistant offers 10% commission; applicants receive stolen funds and are asked to forward the remainder.
- A romance scammer eventually asks their victim to receive a large transfer and forward it, claiming it is for business reasons.
