The National Anti-Scam Centre (NASC) was established within the ACCC in July 2023 following recommendations from the 2023 Scam Awareness and Victim Support report. Its mandate goes beyond reporting to actively disrupt scam operations by working with banks, telecommunications providers, digital platforms, and government agencies to identify and shut down infrastructure used by scammers targeting Australians.
NASC runs targeted disruption campaigns against specific scam types, coordinating with banks to block payments to known scam accounts and with telcos to block spoofed numbers. It also engages with social media platforms to remove scam advertisements and profiles. Intelligence gathered through Scamwatch feeds directly into NASC's disruption activities.
For consumers, the most important interaction with NASC is indirect: by reporting scams via Scamwatch, victims contribute data that enables NASC to identify and disrupt the networks behind those scams. NASC also publishes threat intelligence reports and sector-specific guidance. Businesses that detect scams using their infrastructure (e.g., a bank noticing mule accounts) can report directly to NASC through dedicated partner channels.
