Offshore Business Romance Scam
A fraud in which the scammer poses as a successful entrepreneur or executive with international operations to add credibility and justify financial requests.
Also known as: oil rig romance scam, overseas engineer scam, international contractor romance
Last reviewed: 10 June 2026
The offshore business romance persona typically involves a high-status professional: an engineer on an oil rig, a contract surgeon working overseas, an international trader, or a construction project manager in a distant country. The profession provides a ready explanation for why the person cannot travel, explains their wealth, and gives texture to their story that is difficult to fact-check.
Financial requests arise from business complications: shipments held in customs, contracts delayed, partners who have stolen funds, or temporary banking restrictions. The victim is invited to assist as a trusted partner who will benefit from the business success once the obstacles are resolved. The combination of romantic attachment and financial opportunity keeps victims engaged even when amounts requested are large.
The oil-rig engineer and the overseas surgeon are among the most frequently documented personas in romance fraud databases. These specific professional claims should be treated with heightened scepticism in any online romantic context.
Examples
- A man on a dating site describes managing an oil platform; after weeks of contact, he asks for help covering a customs payment before a valuable shipment can be released.
- A scammer posing as a doctor with a humanitarian contract overseas asks a victim to receive and forward a payment because their bank is inaccessible from the field.
