Reporting Romance Fraud on Dating Platforms
The in-platform mechanisms available on dating and social apps for flagging suspected fraudulent profiles, and the limitations of those systems.

Most major dating platforms and social networks provide tools to report suspicious profiles — typically a flag or report button accessible from a user's profile or message thread. Effective reporting includes selecting the most specific category available (fraud, scam, or fake profile), providing as much detail as possible, and preserving screenshots before reporting, since the profile may be removed and evidence with it.
Platform review processes vary in speed and reliability; a reported profile may remain visible for days or weeks. Reporting to the platform should therefore be complemented by reporting to national consumer protection or fraud agencies, which compile cross-platform data and can act on patterns.
In many jurisdictions, platforms have legal and voluntary commitments to address fraud; publicised cases have led to improvements in detection, but the volume of fraudulent profiles on major services remains substantial. Platform reporting is a first step, not a comprehensive solution.
Examples
- A user reports a profile using stolen military photos on a dating app; they also submit a report to their country's consumer fraud agency with screenshots.
- A victim files a complaint with the platform after discovering the profile is fake; the platform removes it within 48 hours, but the scammer reappears under a new account.
