A central component of pig-butchering and CryptoRom operations is a controlled fake trading platform. These sites and apps are designed to appear as sophisticated investment portals, showing real-time charts, account dashboards, transaction histories, and growing balances. In reality, every figure displayed is fabricated by the platform operators.
Victims are guided to the platform by their romantic contact, who often claims to be using the same service with great success. Small initial withdrawals are permitted to build confidence. When the victim deposits larger sums and attempts to withdraw, they encounter a cascade of fees, tax obligations, or minimum balance requirements that require additional deposits before any funds can be released.
No funds are ever returned. The platform is shut down when the fraud cycle completes, taking all victim deposits with it. Independently researching any investment platform — cross-checking with official financial regulators — before depositing any amount is essential.
Examples
- A victim is directed to a trading website that shows impressive profits on their account; when they try to withdraw, they are told a 20% tax must be deposited first.
- A smartphone app installed via a sent link displays accurate-looking market data but is entirely under scammer control.
