Platform impersonation giveaway scams create accounts that closely mimic an official platform's branding or a popular creator's identity, then announce a giveaway of cash, devices, or platform credits to followers who comment, share, or message the account. Once a target responds, the scammer asks for a small upfront "processing," "shipping," or "tax" fee to release the prize, or requests personal and payment information under the guise of "verifying" the winner.
These accounts often use a name and profile picture nearly identical to the real platform or creator, sometimes purchasing verification-adjacent badges or using slightly altered handles to avoid immediate detection. Because giveaways are a genuine, common practice among creators and platforms, victims often do not question the premise itself, only the details, which the scam is designed to make plausible.
Users should verify giveaway announcements against the creator's or platform's official, previously established account, and remember that legitimate giveaways never require payment or sensitive financial information to claim a prize.
Examples
- A fake account using a platform's logo announces a cash giveaway, then asks winners to pay a small fee to release the funds.
- An account impersonating a popular creator messages followers claiming they won a device giveaway and requests payment card details to cover shipping.
