Social Media Romance Recruitment
The practice of mining social media platforms for potential romance scam targets based on profile indicators of loneliness, bereavement, or financial means.
Also known as: social media targeting romance fraud, Facebook romance scam recruitment, Instagram romance scam

Organised romance fraud operations use social media platforms to identify and approach targets systematically. Profiles showing recently announced bereavement, divorce, or relocation indicate emotional vulnerability; posts signalling financial success or interest in investment suggest financial capacity. Operators may also use data aggregated from data-broker leaks to supplement publicly visible profile information.
Initial contact on social media appears organic: a comment on a public post, a friend request from an attractively presented profile, a reaction that begins a conversation. The contact is designed to feel like a serendipitous meeting rather than a targeted approach.
Being aware that public social media posts communicate more than their face value — and that profile visibility settings and oversharing of personal milestones can attract fraudulent attention — is a useful preventive consideration.
Examples
- A person's Facebook post announcing their spouse's death attracts a sympathetic message from an unknown profile within days; the conversation becomes romantic over the following weeks.
- A public LinkedIn profile listing executive roles and investment interests receives a connection request from an attractively presented stranger who pivots quickly to a cryptocurrency opportunity.
