Social Security Suspension Scam
A phone or robocall scam claiming a person's Social Security number has been 'suspended' due to suspicious activity, pressuring them to pay a fee or reveal personal data to reactivate it.
Also known as: SSN suspension scam, social security robocall scam
Last reviewed: 5 July 2026
This scam typically begins with an automated call claiming to be from a national social security or pension administration, warning that the recipient's number has been suspended, frozen, or linked to criminal activity such as money laundering or drug trafficking. Because a Social Security or National Insurance number is central to identity and income, the threat that it could be suspended, cutting off benefit payments entirely, generates immediate panic that scammers exploit to bypass rational scrutiny.
Victims are told they can resolve the issue by verifying their identity over the phone, which really means reading out their full number, date of birth, and bank details, or by paying a fine via gift card or wire transfer to prevent arrest or suspension. Social Security and equivalent national insurance numbers cannot actually be suspended in this way, and the real administering agency communicates about account issues through official mail or a secure portal, never through a robocall demanding immediate payment or ID verification.
Examples
- An automated call states 'your Social Security number has been suspended due to suspicious activity, press 1 to speak to an officer', leading to a scripted demand for personal details and a fine.
