Sweetheart Scam (Online Dating Fraud)
A fraud in which criminals build a false romantic relationship online to manipulate victims into sending money, gifts, or personal financial access.

Romance scams are among the most financially and emotionally damaging fraud types. The perpetrator creates a compelling fake persona — often claiming to be a professional working abroad (military, oil rig, doctor, engineer) — and invests time building a genuine-feeling relationship through dating apps, social media, or messaging platforms.
After establishing deep trust, the fraudster introduces a financial crisis: a medical emergency, a business loan, customs fees on a gift, an investment opportunity. Requests begin small and escalate. Victims who send money are frequently asked for more, as their willingness proves they are a viable target. Emotional manipulation includes declarations of love, talk of a future together, and guilt when the victim hesitates.
The shame attached to these scams suppresses reporting. Victims benefit from hearing that these operations are run by sophisticated criminal organisations with trained, scripted personnel — not lone individuals — and that being deceived is not a sign of foolishness.
Examples
- After eight weeks of daily contact, an online partner asks for £3,000 to cover hospital bills abroad, promising to repay when they visit.
- A new online acquaintance asks for help receiving a parcel by paying customs fees, then for ever-larger sums as circumstances worsen.
