Sympathy donation scams typically appear on crowdfunding platforms or social media within hours of a death becoming public, especially after a well-publicized accident, crime, or community tragedy. The scammer creates a fundraiser using the victim's name and photo, sometimes copied from social media or news coverage, describing a need to cover funeral costs or support surviving children, and shares it aggressively through community groups and shared social networks.
Because genuine grief fundraisers do exist and are a normal part of modern mourning, a fake one is difficult to distinguish without direct confirmation from the family. Scammers exploit the compressed timeline of grief, when people want to help immediately and are unlikely to conduct due diligence, and often create multiple competing fundraisers for the same death to maximize total donations collected.
Before donating to any bereavement fundraiser, it is worth checking whether the campaign is linked from a verified family member's own social media post or confirmed by the funeral home, and preferring platforms that verify beneficiary identity or hold funds until identity is confirmed.
Examples
- A fundraiser appears within hours of a local news story about a fatal accident, using the victim's photo but with a payout account unconnected to the family.
