WhatsApp Romance Pivot
A tactic in which a scammer moves a target from a dating or social platform to WhatsApp or another encrypted messaging app to avoid platform moderation.
Also known as: platform migration scam, WhatsApp redirect fraud, Telegram romance move

Dating platforms and social networks invest resources in detecting and removing fraudulent profiles. Scammers mitigate this risk by moving conversations from moderated platforms to unregulated messaging apps — typically WhatsApp, Telegram, or WeChat — as early as possible in the relationship. The move is presented as a natural step toward greater intimacy and convenience.
Once off the original platform, the scammer's profile cannot be reported and reviewed in context, and the conversation is less likely to be flagged or interrupted by automated detection systems. The victim is also psychologically further committed by the time they transition, as they have voluntarily moved to a more private channel.
Being asked to move to a separate messaging platform very early in an online interaction is a documented risk pattern. Continuing to use in-platform messaging, which provides access to reporting tools and moderation support, is safer.
Examples
- Within two days of matching on a dating app, a contact says they rarely use the app and prefer WhatsApp, sharing their number immediately.
- A Facebook contact quickly suggests moving to Telegram for 'more privacy' before any significant personal information has been shared.
