Winter fuel and heating support payments are genuine seasonal benefits in several countries, typically paid automatically to pensioners or low-income households during colder months. Scammers time their campaigns to coincide with the real payment announcement each year, sending texts, emails, or making phone calls that claim the recipient must 'apply', 'confirm eligibility', or provide bank details to receive the payment. Because the target demographic for winter fuel payments skews older, this scam is frequently paired with tactics aimed specifically at elderly victims, including slower-paced, reassuring phone scripts.
Some versions ask for a small fee to 'process' the application, while others go straight for bank account or card details under the guise of setting up direct payment. Genuine winter fuel and heating benefit payments for existing pension or benefit recipients are usually paid automatically without any application, and any scheme that does require an application is handled through an official government website or paper form, never a cold call or unsolicited text link.
