Losing access to a WhatsApp account can feel urgent and isolating — contacts, group memberships, and business communications may all be unreachable. This urgency is exploited by scammers who reach out via alternative channels, claiming to offer fast recovery in exchange for payment.
Because WhatsApp recovery is legitimate and handled through the platform's own re-registration flow, no third-party specialist can provide genuine assistance. Any paid offer is fraudulent.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
Someone who has posted about a hacked WhatsApp account in a public forum or social media group receives a message or call from a stranger offering paid recovery. The stranger requests advance payment via gift card, peer-to-peer payment, or cryptocurrency, claiming they need it to 'process the recovery request with WhatsApp'.
After payment is received, the operator either provides generic advice already available in WhatsApp's help documentation or requests the victim's phone number and asks them to forward any SMS code received — completing a takeover of the victim's remaining accounts rather than recovering the lost one.
Some operators use compromised WhatsApp accounts to reach their original owner's contacts with recovery service offers — a particularly ironic scenario where the compromised account is used to scam the people who trust it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the legitimate process to recover a taken-over WhatsApp account?
Re-install WhatsApp on your device and attempt to register your phone number. WhatsApp will send a six-digit SMS code to your number. If the attacker changed your two-step verification PIN, you can request a one-week waiting period after which the account can be re-registered. This entire process is free and requires no external service.
