Fake eBay Account-Suspension Phishing and Account Takeover
Phishing emails impersonating eBay warn that your account has been suspended or limited, directing you to a fake sign-in page where your credentials are stolen.

eBay account suspension phishing is a persistent threat because eBay sellers depend on their accounts for income and both buyers and sellers fear losing access. A suspension notification creates immediate panic, which is exactly what scammers want.
The emails are crafted to look identical to genuine eBay security notifications, including the eBay logo, the blue and yellow colour scheme, and plausible-sounding restriction reasons such as 'unusual sign-in activity detected' or 'your listing violated eBay policy'. The goal is to get you to click the 'Restore Account' or 'Verify Identity' button before you think to log in directly.
Once credentials are captured, attackers use them to list fraudulent items on the victim's account (which has an established feedback rating), collect payments, and never ship. The original account holder then faces disputes from defrauded buyers and may have their account permanently suspended by eBay.
How this scam works on the eBay brand
eBay communicates genuine account restrictions through messages visible inside your eBay account under Messages, and by email from @ebay.com. Real suspension notices reference your specific eBay username and describe a concrete policy that was allegedly violated. Fake notices address you generically or use your email address instead of your eBay username.
The fake sign-in page typically mirrors eBay's design closely but the URL will contain extra words (ebay-security-verify.com, accountconfirm-ebay.net) rather than a subdomain of ebay.com. Once you enter your username and password, some variants then ask for payment card details to 'verify your identity and restore full account access'.
After the takeover, attackers sometimes also contact the victim's PayPal account (since eBay accounts were historically linked) or attempt to use saved addresses for account-bound fraud.
Common red flags
- Sender email is not from @ebay.com or your regional eBay domain
- The message addresses you as 'Dear eBay User' or uses your email address rather than your eBay username
- The 'Restore Account' link leads to a URL that is not a subdomain of ebay.com
- The page requests your payment card details to 'verify' or 'restore' your account — eBay does not do this
- You are being asked to respond urgently within a very short timeframe (e.g. 'account deleted in 24 hours')
- Checking your actual eBay account shows no suspension notice in your Messages
How to protect yourself
- Ignore links in the email; open a new browser tab and go directly to ebay.com, then check Messages for any genuine account notices
- If no notice exists in your eBay Messages, the email is fake — report it and delete it
- Enable two-factor authentication on your eBay account immediately if you have not already done so
- Use a unique, strong password for your eBay account that you do not use on any other site
- If you did click the link and enter credentials, change your eBay password immediately, then check your active listings for any items you did not post
How to report it
- Forward the phishing email to [email protected]
- If your account was actually compromised, contact eBay Customer Service via ebay.com/help immediately
- Report to IC3.gov (US), Action Fraud (UK), or your national cybercrime authority
- If any fraudulent listings were created on your account, report them to eBay to protect buyers
Frequently asked questions
eBay says my account is suspended in an email — how do I check if it is real?
Log in directly at ebay.com (not via the email link). If a genuine suspension exists, you will see a notice inside your account. If everything looks normal, the email is phishing.
My eBay account was taken over and used to scam buyers. Am I liable?
You should not be liable for fraudulent activity conducted without your knowledge. Report the compromise to eBay Customer Service immediately and cooperate fully. eBay will typically investigate and reverse fraudulent listings once you notify them.
