Advance-Fee Scams in Egypt
Prepayment fraud targeting Egyptians and diaspora members with foreign lottery prizes, Gulf inheritance claims, or government grant notifications requiring upfront fees.

Advance-fee fraud remains a significant problem in Egypt, particularly targeting the large Egyptian diaspora community with schemes framed around Gulf inheritance, international awards, or overseas government grants. Inside Egypt, domestic variants exploit government subsidy programs and national lottery branding.
Egypt's active Gulf labor migration community is a specific target: scammers pose as Gulf lawyers or estate administrators notifying Egyptian workers of unclaimed inheritance from a deceased employer or distant relative.
How this scam works on Egypt
A WhatsApp message or email arrives claiming an Egyptian worker's deceased Gulf employer has left an estate that includes the victim as a beneficiary. A chain of fees — legal documentation, customs clearance, Egyptian tax compliance — must be paid before the inheritance can be transferred.
Domestic variants impersonate Egypt Post or the National Authority for Social Insurance, claiming the victim has an uncollected prize or benefit. SMS messages are sent with links to pages collecting personal and financial information.
In the diaspora variant, Egyptian communities in Italy, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are targeted with messages tailored to their migration experience — referencing Gulf employers or foreign government programs plausibly connected to their history.
Common red flags
- Unexpected notification of inheritance from an unknown or distant relative in the Gulf
- Request for advance fees to release promised prize, benefit, or inheritance
- Government benefit notification received via personal WhatsApp or email rather than official channels
- Each payment generates a new demand for a different fee
- Instructions to keep the matter confidential until transfer is complete
- Sender cannot provide a verifiable official reference number or case file
How to protect yourself
- Legitimate inheritances and government benefits in Egypt do not require advance fee payments
- Verify any claimed government benefit through Egypt's official social insurance channels
- Consult an Egyptian lawyer (محامي) before paying any fee related to a claimed inheritance
- Share unexpected financial windfall notifications with trusted family members before acting
- Report suspicious messages to Egypt's Ministry of Interior cybercrime unit
How to report it
- Report to Egypt's Ministry of Interior cybercrime unit via mcit.gov.eg
- File a complaint with the NTRA at ntra.gov.eg for SMS fraud
- Report to Egypt Post if the message impersonates Egypt Post services
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify whether a Gulf inheritance claim is legitimate?
Contact the relevant Gulf country's official estate court directly, using contact details found on the government's official website rather than those provided by the claimant. Engage an Egyptian or Gulf-licensed lawyer to investigate. No legitimate estate requires you to pay multiple escalating fees through WhatsApp contacts.
