TikTok's algorithm regularly surfaces 'app of the day' style videos and creator reviews that drive hundreds of thousands of downloads. Scam operators pay for placement in these content categories or seed organic-looking accounts to promote apps that monetise primarily through aggressive in-app subscription prompts.
When a user installs the app and is immediately shown an App Store subscription prompt, the biometric authentication used to confirm purchases makes the entire interaction take under three seconds — often before the user has read any pricing information.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok video demonstrates a seemingly useful app — a filter, productivity tool, or AI feature — and directs viewers to download it from the App Store. On first launch, the app immediately presents a subscription prompt asking for annual access at a high price. The 'Free Trial' button is prominent but requires biometric confirmation to proceed. Users who tap to 'try for free' unknowingly authorise the subscription.
The app typically offers minimal actual functionality. Within days, the first charge appears. Finding the subscription to cancel requires navigating to iOS Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions — a path many users do not know.
