Sellers of counterfeit goods — fake designer bags, electronics, sneakers, and more — often pressure buyers to pay via PayPal Friends and Family. The pitch is a discount or 'fee saving,' but the real aim is to strip away the purchase protection that would let a buyer dispute a fake or undelivered item.
Friends and Family payments are treated as personal gifts and are not covered by PayPal purchase protection. Buyers who pay this way cannot open a not-as-described or item-not-received case, leaving them stuck with counterfeits or nothing.
How this scam works on PayPal Friends and Family
The seller advertises a 'genuine' branded item at a suspiciously low price on social media or a marketplace, then asks the buyer to pay via Friends and Family to secure the deal or get a discount.
The buyer pays, and a counterfeit arrives or nothing is delivered. When they seek a refund, the seller refuses, and PayPal cannot intervene because Friends and Family lacks protection.
The low price and discount incentive push the buyer into the unprotected payment, after which recovery is very difficult and the goods, if any, are fake.

Frequently asked questions
Can I dispute a counterfeit item paid via Friends and Family?
No. PayPal Friends and Family payments are personal gifts with no purchase protection, so you cannot open a not-as-described dispute. Sellers who demand it for goods are usually hiding counterfeits. Always pay for goods with Goods and Services.
