Courier Fraud & Bank Card Collection on Telegram
Criminals use Telegram accounts styled as bank fraud teams or law enforcement to convince victims their card is compromised, then dispatch a fake courier to collect the card and PIN at home.

Telegram's anonymous account creation and channel broadcasting features make it attractive to courier fraud operators. A scammer can create a Telegram account with an official-looking name and avatar in minutes, then contact victims directly via their phone number if it is linked to Telegram.
The fraud follows the same pattern as phone-based courier fraud but exploits Telegram's reputation as a secure messaging app to add perceived legitimacy. Victims who use Telegram for legitimate banking notifications may be especially susceptible.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram message arrives claiming to be from a bank anti-fraud team. The message explains that the victim's debit or credit card has been flagged for suspicious activity and that a courier has been dispatched to collect the compromised card to prevent further misuse. The victim is told to keep the card ready and to note the PIN on the accompanying slip.
The operator often sends official-looking screenshots of 'fraud alerts' within the Telegram chat to reinforce the story. If the victim hesitates, a follow-up voice note in a convincing professional tone is sent through Telegram to apply additional pressure.
Once the courier — an unwitting third party recruited via a fake job ad, or a confederate — collects the card and PIN slip, withdrawals begin immediately.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited Telegram message from a bank or law-enforcement account you have not interacted with before
- Message includes screenshots of fake fraud alerts or official-looking documents
- Request for your physical bank card to be given to a courier arriving at your address
- Being asked to include your PIN with the card for 'verification'
- Voice note from a person claiming to be a bank security manager adding urgency
- Instructions to remain available and not contact your bank branch directly
- Account username contains variations of a real bank name or 'fraud-team'
How to protect yourself
- Verify any bank contact by calling the number on the back of your card — never trust a Telegram message alone
- Understand that banks never request card collection via messaging apps
- Disable 'Who can find me by phone number' in Telegram Privacy settings to reduce cold-contact fraud
- Never PIN-protect a card and then share that PIN with anyone, under any circumstances
- Report the account to Telegram using the in-app report tool before blocking
- Alert your bank immediately if you have already handed over a card
How to report it
- Report the Telegram account via the three-dot menu and select 'Report' then 'Fraud'
- Contact your bank's fraud line immediately to freeze the card
- Report the incident to your national fraud authority and local police
Frequently asked questions
Why would a scammer use Telegram rather than a phone call for courier fraud?
Telegram allows fraudsters to create official-looking accounts anonymously, send convincing screenshots, and reach victims who have linked their phone number to the app. The app's 'secure messaging' reputation can also make victims less sceptical than they would be with an unknown phone call.
