Crypto Giveaway Scams on Discord
Fake crypto giveaways flood Discord servers and DMs, promising to double or multiply any cryptocurrency you send to a given wallet. No legitimate project ever requires you to send crypto first to receive more.

Crypto giveaway scams are among the most common fraud types on Discord. They exploit the platform's bot infrastructure and impersonation capabilities to imitate well-known projects, celebrities, or exchange announcements at scale.
Because Discord allows rich embeds, custom bot names, and cloned server aesthetics, a fake giveaway announcement can look almost indistinguishable from a legitimate project update — until you notice the send-first requirement.
How this scam works on Discord
Scammers create Discord bots that DM every member of large crypto servers with a giveaway announcement. The message uses the logo and colour scheme of a real project and claims a limited-time event where any amount of crypto sent to a wallet will be matched or doubled within minutes.
Alternatively, attackers compromise high-profile Discord accounts or create lookalike server names, then post announcements in large servers directing members to an external giveaway site. The site requests a wallet connection or direct transfer to 'verify eligibility.'
Some operations post in legitimate project servers pretending to be official team announcements, banking on the trust users have already built with the real project.
Common red flags
- Bot DM announcing a giveaway requiring you to send crypto first
- Giveaway announced by an account created very recently with the project name
- External site asking to connect your wallet to participate
- Countdown timer creating artificial urgency
- Announcement not pinned or referenced in the official project's other channels
- Wallet address provided only in the DM, not on the official project website
How to protect yourself
- Verify giveaway announcements directly on the official project website or verified social channels — not just Discord
- Never send cryptocurrency to participate in any giveaway — legitimate giveaways never require this
- Revoke wallet permissions immediately after any suspicious connection via your wallet settings
- Enable Discord's spam filter and set DMs from server members to require a friend request first
- Check server creation date and member count before trusting announcements from unfamiliar servers
How to report it
- Report the bot or user account directly in Discord using the Report function
- Alert the legitimate project's official support channel so they can warn their community
- Report to the FBI's IC3 (ic3.gov) or your national cybercrime unit if funds were lost
Frequently asked questions
Do real crypto projects ever run giveaways on Discord?
Some do, but legitimate giveaways never ask you to send funds first. They typically require actions like following accounts or completing a form, and they are always verifiable on the project's official website.
