Cash App natively supports Bitcoin purchases and transfers, which scammers exploit to make crypto payments feel familiar and low-friction. Victims who may be new to crypto are told that Cash App Bitcoin is 'safe' because it is connected to their bank — but once Bitcoin is sent from Cash App to an external wallet, it is as irreversible as any on-chain transaction.
Cash App's peer-to-peer dollar payment feature is also abused: scammers collect dollar 'investment deposits' via Cash App $Cashtag, knowing that personal Cash App transactions are treated as voluntary and are not covered by fraud protection.
How this scam works on Cash App
Scammers on social media or messaging apps offer investment opportunities and ask victims to fund them via Cash App. They may request Bitcoin sent to a wallet address, or dollars sent to a $Cashtag framed as an 'investment account.' The platform shows fabricated returns, and withdrawal is blocked pending fees.
Cash App's 'money flip' scam variant is particularly common on Instagram and TikTok: a post claims that sending a specific amount to a $Cashtag will return a multiple within hours. Victims who send money receive nothing. Some variants target Cash App users directly through the platform's payment notification feature, sending small payments and then requesting them back 'by mistake' — a classic overpayment setup.

Frequently asked questions
Can Cash App reverse a Bitcoin transfer if I was scammed?
Cash App cannot reverse Bitcoin transactions sent to an external wallet — blockchain transactions are final once confirmed. For Cash App dollar transactions, Cash App may review disputes but generally treats personal payments as voluntary and non-reversible. Acting within minutes of sending may allow a payment cancellation before processing completes.
