Dating app crypto grooming — sometimes called pig-butchering — is one of the most financially destructive scams targeting individuals online. The fraudster invests considerable time building what appears to be a genuine romantic relationship before subtly introducing a supposedly lucrative cryptocurrency investment opportunity.
Dating apps are the preferred entry point because users are in a receptive emotional state and have already opted in to forming personal connections with strangers. The trust built through romantic dialogue is then redirected toward financial manipulation.
How this scam works on Dating apps
After a period of consistent, affectionate messaging, the scammer mentions they have been earning impressive returns through a private crypto trading platform — often framed as a family contact or exclusive professional tool. They offer to show the victim how it works, initially encouraging small investments that show spectacular paper gains.
Encouraged by apparent profits, victims deposit increasingly large sums. Withdrawals are blocked by invented fees, taxes, or account verification requirements. Eventually the platform disappears entirely or the scammer cuts contact, leaving the victim with nothing.
Some victims are also encouraged to recruit friends or family, adding a social dimension to the exploitation.
Common red flags
- A romantic match casually mentions large personal gains from a private investment platform
- The platform is accessible only through a specific app or link, not through mainstream exchanges
- Early small deposits show unusually high returns to build confidence
- Withdrawals trigger additional fee or tax payment demands
- The platform's website has no verifiable regulatory registration
- The romantic partner becomes urgently pushy about increasing your investment
How to protect yourself
- Treat any investment recommendation from an online romantic contact as a major red flag
- Only use cryptocurrency exchanges that are regulated in your jurisdiction
- Verify any trading platform with the relevant financial regulator before depositing funds
- Never deposit more money to unlock previous gains or cover withdrawal fees
- Speak with a trusted person before making any financial decisions suggested by a new contact
- Report the platform to your financial regulator as well as the dating app
How to report it
- Report the profile to the dating app's trust and safety team
- File a report with your national financial regulator and cybercrime unit
- Contact your bank immediately if any bank transfers were made
Frequently asked questions
What makes crypto grooming different from a typical romance scam?
The primary motive is extracting large investment sums rather than smaller emotional payments. The fraudster spends longer building trust and the amounts lost are typically much higher, sometimes representing the victim's entire savings.
