Disaster Relief Scams on Discord
Fraudsters use Discord servers and direct messages to solicit disaster relief donations, impersonating community fundraising efforts or known charities to collect funds that are not forwarded to any relief operation.

Discord communities that form around specific regions, diaspora groups, or humanitarian interests are natural gathering points for genuine mutual aid in times of crisis. Their tight-knit nature and direct communication channels also make them effective vehicles for fraud, as the personal tone of a Discord message from an apparent community member lowers donor scepticism significantly.
The speed with which information spreads in active Discord servers — pinned messages, @everyone announcements, and role-based alerts — means that fraudulent relief appeals can reach an entire community within minutes of being posted.
How this scam works on Discord
A server admin account is compromised, or a fake account with a similar name to a trusted community figure posts an emergency donation appeal in a high-visibility channel. The appeal includes a payment link for donations in cryptocurrency or direct bank transfer. Community members who see the post from what appears to be a trusted source contribute immediately without verification.
Newly created servers styled as crisis response coordination hubs are promoted in related communities. Members are directed to donate through pinned messages with wallet addresses. The server is deleted once sufficient funds are collected.
Recovery fraud follows in the same channels: after a relief scam is exposed, a second account offers to help scam victims recover their donated funds in exchange for a further payment.
Common red flags
- Donation appeal arrives via an @everyone ping in a server you joined for a different purpose
- Appeal provides only cryptocurrency addresses or untraceable payment links
- Posting account was created recently or has very limited history in the server
- Server was created within hours or days of the disaster it claims to be responding to
- Urgency language such as 'needs to be sent tonight' or 'operation closes tomorrow'
- No transparency about the specific organisation or individuals coordinating the relief
How to protect yourself
- Donate to disaster relief through established organisations with verifiable registrations, not through Discord payment links
- Verify any relief appeal by contacting server administrators through a separate, established communication channel
- Wait for server moderators to verify and post official charity links before contributing
- Report suspicious donation appeals to Discord Trust and Safety and the server's legitimate moderators
- Avoid cryptocurrency donations to addresses provided only in Discord without independent verification
How to report it
- Report the account or message to Discord Trust and Safety using the right-click report function
- Alert server moderators through a verified contact method outside of the suspicious channel
- Contact your national cybercrime authority if funds were transferred to a fraudulent account
Frequently asked questions
Should I trust a disaster donation appeal from a Discord server I trust?
Even trusted servers can have compromised admin accounts or infiltrated members who post fraudulent appeals. Verify any donation link by navigating directly to the charity's official website rather than clicking links posted in Discord, regardless of how trusted the source appears.
