Telegram's prevalence in crisis-affected regions and diaspora communities means that disaster-related channels can reach people with personal connections to an affected area, making appeals more emotionally compelling and harder to question objectively. Fraudulent channels exploit this by posting content that speaks directly to the concerns of diaspora donors who want to help their home communities.
The speed at which Telegram channels can be created and distributed across existing community networks allows fraudulent relief operations to establish a presence faster than official organisations can communicate through the same channels.
How this scam works on Telegram
Hours after a disaster, a Telegram channel launches with an appeal for cryptocurrency donations. The channel name, description, and initial posts mimic a well-known international relief organisation. Regular 'field updates' — sourced from news media and presented as the organisation's own reporting — maintain the appearance of active operations while no actual relief work takes place.
Diaspora-focused variants claim to represent local community organisations, using geographical specificity to build credibility. These channels solicit direct mobile money transfers or cryptocurrency, making fund recovery almost impossible.
Some channels target previous donors from other cryptocurrency scams with 'matched donation' announcements, claiming that a philanthropist will double any contribution made in a specific time window.
Common red flags
- Channel launched within hours of a disaster with immediate donation requests
- Cryptocurrency is the only accepted donation method
- Channel cannot provide a verifiable charity registration number predating the disaster
- Field updates are sourced from news outlets rather than original on-the-ground reporting
- Matched donation claim cannot be verified through a named, identifiable philanthropist
- Channel administrator cannot be reached outside of Telegram
How to protect yourself
- Donate only to established relief organisations with verifiable pre-disaster track records
- Wait at least 24 hours after a disaster before donating to allow verified organisations to launch official campaigns
- Verify any Telegram relief channel through the organisation's official website before contributing
- Avoid cryptocurrency donations to relief efforts unless the wallet address is confirmed on the organisation's official website
- Report suspicious relief channels to Telegram to limit their reach
How to report it
- Report the channel to Telegram by forwarding a message to @notoscam or using the report feature
- Alert the genuine relief organisation whose identity is being used
- Report to your national charity regulator if a registered organisation is being impersonated
Frequently asked questions
Why do disaster scams specifically favour cryptocurrency donations?
Cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible, making chargebacks impossible. They also cross borders without the oversight applied to international wire transfers. Combined, these properties mean that once a cryptocurrency donation is sent to a fraudulent address, it cannot be recovered regardless of how quickly the fraud is identified.
