Scammers hijack or impersonate X accounts, including verified ones, to DM followers with fake crypto giveaways that require sending funds first to 'unlock' a larger return.

X's public reply threads and mass-follow culture around crypto and tech accounts give giveaway hijack scammers a large, self-selecting audience already primed to believe a well-known account might legitimately be running a crypto promotion.
How this scam works on X (Twitter)
A hijacked or cloned account with a recognizable name and profile picture posts or DMs followers claiming a limited-time giveaway where sending a small amount of cryptocurrency to a listed wallet address returns double or triple the amount instantly. Because the account may display a legitimate-looking checkmark or have genuine historical posts before being compromised, victims underestimate the risk and send funds expecting an automated 'send-back' that never arrives — cryptocurrency transactions cannot be reversed once confirmed.
A parallel version operates through direct messages rather than public posts, where a hijacked or lookalike account privately DMs individual followers claiming they were 'selected' for a giveaway, using the appearance of a personal, exclusive invitation to bypass the skepticism a public giveaway post might otherwise attract.
Common red flags
- A giveaway promises to return double or more of any cryptocurrency sent to a wallet address
- The DM claims you were personally 'selected' for an exclusive, limited-time crypto giveaway
- The account's recent post history shows a sudden, out-of-character focus on crypto giveaways
- You're asked to send crypto first before receiving anything back
- The account was recently renamed or its posting pattern changed abruptly right before the giveaway posts began
- Urgency language pushing you to act within minutes or hours
How to protect yourself
- Never send cryptocurrency to any address expecting a larger amount back — this is never how legitimate giveaways work
- Verify unusual posts or DMs from known accounts through a separate, trusted communication channel
- Treat a sudden shift to crypto-giveaway content from a previously unrelated account as a compromise indicator
- Enable two-factor authentication on your own X account to reduce hijack risk
- Report and mute/block accounts sending unsolicited crypto giveaway DMs
- Assume any crypto transaction is final and irreversible before ever sending funds
How to report it
- Report the account and DM using X's in-app Report function
- Report to X Support if you believe a legitimate account has been hijacked
- Report the wallet address to blockchain analytics or exchange fraud teams if funds were sent
- File a complaint with the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
Frequently asked questions
Can a verified or well-known X account really send a legitimate crypto giveaway DM?
Legitimate crypto giveaways never require you to send funds first to receive more back — any DM asking for that, regardless of the account's apparent legitimacy, is a scam or the account has been hijacked.
Can I get my cryptocurrency back after sending it to a giveaway scam wallet?
Cryptocurrency transactions are generally irreversible once confirmed on the blockchain, so recovery is unlikely, though reporting the wallet address may help investigators track the funds.
