Instagram's visual format is particularly well suited to exotic pet scams because the appeal of rare animals — monkeys, parrots, reptiles, big cats — is inherently visual. A professionally photographed or video-edited post of a baby marmoset or a hand-raised parrot can generate rapid engagement and genuine purchase enquiries. Fraudulent sellers build these feeds over time, mixing authentic exotic animal content from other sources with their own sale listings.
The desire to own an unusual pet combined with the difficulty of finding ethical, legal sources through normal channels means buyers are often willing to suspend their usual caution when a seemingly perfect opportunity appears on their feed. Instagram's DM feature moves the transaction off the public post and into private, making the scam harder to detect.
How this scam works on Instagram
A fraudulent exotic pet account on Instagram typically features a feed of attractive, professionally shot exotic animal photos. Sale listings announce that a particular animal is available, directing interested buyers to send a DM. In the DM conversation, the seller provides detailed backstory about the animal, its health status, and its temperament. A deposit secures the animal, with further fees requested for shipping, permits, and health documentation.
Once sufficient money has been collected, the seller uses the same escalating-fee tactics as other pet scams: customs clearance costs, quarantine requirements, and emergency veterinary charges. The fictional animal never arrives. In some cases, a completely different or illegal species is delivered, exposing the buyer to legal consequences.

Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to buy an exotic pet through Instagram?
Depending on the species and your country, purchasing through informal online channels may violate CITES, the Endangered Species Act, or local wildlife legislation. Buying a protected species even unknowingly can result in prosecution.
How can I find a legitimate source for an exotic pet?
Contact your country's exotic pet association or a licensed breeder registered with the relevant wildlife authorities. Avoid any seller who operates solely through social media or refuses to provide official documentation.
