Unlike Ethereum, Bitcoin does not natively support token airdrops, yet scammers successfully run fake Bitcoin airdrop campaigns by exploiting holders unfamiliar with technical distinctions. Claims of a 'new Bitcoin fork airdrop' or 'loyalty reward for long-term BTC holders' are used as lures.
Victims either send BTC to an address as a 'verification deposit' to claim their airdrop, or are directed to a fake portal where they enter their wallet seed phrase or private key, handing over complete control of their Bitcoin holdings.
How this scam works on Bitcoin
Social media accounts impersonating well-known Bitcoin figures or exchanges announce a limited-time airdrop for Bitcoin holders. The claim page instructs users to verify their wallet by sending a small amount of BTC to confirm ownership — the airdrop never materialises and the deposit is stolen.
Some campaigns target holders of other cryptocurrencies, advertising that they are eligible for free Bitcoin in exchange for visiting a claim portal that then attempts to harvest wallet credentials.
Fake 'Bitcoin Improvement Proposal' announcements on Reddit or Telegram claim a consensus upgrade will airdrop tokens to all BTC holders who verify their address through a linked site.
Common red flags
- Airdrop requires a BTC verification deposit before the reward is released
- Claim portal asks for your wallet seed phrase, private key, or extended public key
- Announcement comes through a DM or unverified account rather than official project channels
- The 'fork' or 'airdrop' is not discussed on Bitcoin's main development forums or recognised news sources
- Time pressure to claim before a deadline creates urgency
- The airdrop portal was registered or launched very recently
How to protect yourself
- Verify any Bitcoin fork or airdrop claim through official Bitcoin development discussion boards and reputable cryptocurrency news sources
- Never send BTC to claim a reward — legitimate airdrops do not require a deposit
- Never enter your seed phrase or private key on any external website
- Be extra sceptical of airdrop announcements delivered via DM or newly created accounts
- Use a hardware wallet so that key material cannot be extracted by malicious sites even if you do interact with them
- Report suspicious airdrop campaigns to the platform and to community moderation teams
How to report it
- Report the impersonation account and the claim portal URL to the relevant social media platform
- Submit the scam Bitcoin address to blockchain threat intelligence services
- File a cybercrime report with your national authority including any transaction IDs
Frequently asked questions
Can Bitcoin actually be airdropped like Ethereum tokens?
Bitcoin itself cannot be airdropped in the same way as ERC-20 tokens. Legitimate Bitcoin forks create a separate chain where holders receive equivalent coins, but the process does not require depositing BTC or entering private credentials on a website. Any such requirement is fraudulent.
