Telegram channels promoting business opportunities, wholesale buyers, and lead lists have become a venue for fake B2B lead scams. The app's anonymity and username-based identities let a scammer pose as a buyer or lead broker with little to verify behind the claim.
Businesses scanning these channels for new clients may be tempted by promises of ready-made pipelines or eager buyers. The same privacy that appeals to legitimate networking makes it difficult to confirm who is really behind an offer, which is the gap the scam relies on.
How this scam works on Telegram
The scammer posts in business or trade channels, or messages directly, presenting either a large buyer requirement or a package of qualified leads for sale. They describe plausible opportunities to draw a target into negotiation.
They then request an upfront fee for the leads, a deposit to secure a contract, or a payment for a fabricated registration, sometimes seeking sensitive business data as part of supposed onboarding. The promised opportunity is used to justify the payment.
After the fee or data is provided, the opportunity disappears and the account stops responding or demands more. Because Telegram identities can be changed or abandoned, the buyer is left with no realistic way to recover funds or trace the operator.
Common red flags
- A Telegram offer of guaranteed leads or a large buyer for a fee
- A username-based contact with no verifiable company behind it
- A request for an upfront fee, deposit, or registration payment
- Pressure to act before the opportunity supposedly expires
- Requests for sensitive business data early in the exchange
- An account that can be renamed or discarded without trace
How to protect yourself
- Verify the counterpart's company through official records first
- Refuse to pay any fee to receive supposed leads
- Treat username-based identities as unverified by default
- Withhold sensitive data until the opportunity is confirmed
- Be wary of guaranteed results and time pressure
- Check independent references before committing money
How to report it
- Report the account or channel using Telegram's in-app tools
- File a report with your national fraud or cybercrime authority
- Notify your bank or payment provider if any fee was paid
Frequently asked questions
Can I trust a B2B lead list sold through a Telegram channel?
Be very cautious. Telegram identities are based on usernames that can be changed or abandoned, and paying upfront for leads is a common scam. Verify the seller's company independently and avoid sending money to an unverified contact.
