Boiler and home emergency cover is typically renewed annually and managed by email, making it a natural target for phishing. A renewal reminder email from an apparent boiler cover provider, arriving when the consumer knows their existing policy is due, is likely to receive an immediate and trusting response. The risk is compounded by the fact that consumers rarely read the detail of boiler cover policies — they simply want to know they are covered.
Email-based boiler cover fraud has two distinct variants: phishing for an existing policy's renewal payment, and selling entirely fictitious policies to people searching for new cover. Both leave the consumer unprotected when a breakdown occurs.
How this scam works on email
A renewal email arrives appearing to come from a known boiler cover provider — British Gas HomeCare, Homeserve, or a similar name. A link processes the annual payment but directs payment to a fraudulent account rather than the real provider. The consumer believes their cover has been renewed. On breakdown, they discover the renewal never reached the real provider and their policy lapsed.
In the new-policy variant, a promotional email offers highly competitive boiler cover with annual fees substantially below market rates. The policy document that arrives looks convincing but is entirely fictitious. Claims are denied, calls go unanswered, and the company cannot be found in any insurance regulatory register.
Common red flags
- Renewal email from a domain not matching the actual cover provider's official address
- Payment link leads to a URL that differs from the provider's normal account portal
- Renewal price is dramatically different from the quoted price on your current policy
- New cover offered at a price substantially below any comparison site result
- Policy document contains no FCA registration number or regulatory disclosure
- Claims line is unavailable, premium-rate, or answered by an untrained operative
How to protect yourself
- Renew boiler cover directly through the provider's official website or by calling the number on your current policy document
- Verify any new boiler cover provider on the FCA register at register.fca.org.uk
- Check that your renewal payment appears on your official account by logging in independently
- Keep your policy document and confirm cover start and end dates are correct
How to report it
- Report to the FCA (UK) if a provider is not authorised
- Report to Action Fraud (UK) if payment was made fraudulently
- Contact your bank to dispute the charge if the real provider has no record of your payment
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify that my boiler cover has been renewed successfully?
Log in to your cover provider's account portal directly or call their official customer service number. Ask them to confirm the renewal date and that payment was received. Do not rely solely on the email confirmation.
Is boiler cover regulated by the FCA?
Boiler breakdown insurance is regulated by the FCA in the UK. All providers must be on the FCA register. You can check any provider at register.fca.org.uk before purchasing cover.
