TikTok's algorithm-driven discovery means even small creators can go viral overnight, and fake brand ambassador scammers exploit the resulting excitement by reaching out right as a creator's engagement spikes, when they're most primed to believe a big brand has noticed them.
How this scam works on TikTok
After a video performs well, a comment or DM claims to be from a brand's TikTok Creator Marketplace team offering a paid ambassador deal, but directs the creator off-platform to a messaging app to finalize details, where they're asked to pay an application or 'onboarding' fee before any contract or product is provided. Because TikTok's real Creator Marketplace does connect brands with creators for paid partnerships, the scam version borrows that terminology closely enough that creators unfamiliar with the actual platform tools don't realize the real system never requires an upfront payment from the creator.
Another version asks the creator to first promote a product using their own money to buy it, promising reimbursement plus a bonus fee after posting, then never reimburses once the video is posted and the creator has no further leverage to demand payment.
Common red flags
- A DM claiming to be from a brand's marketing team follows shortly after a video goes viral
- You're asked to move the conversation off TikTok to a messaging app quickly
- An upfront application, onboarding, or product purchase fee is requested before any contract exists
- You're asked to buy and promote a product first with a promise of reimbursement later
- No use of TikTok's actual Creator Marketplace or Creator Marketplace-verified brand account
- Vague or unverifiable brand identity, with no official TikTok account link provided
How to protect yourself
- Verify any brand partnership offer through TikTok's official Creator Marketplace rather than an off-platform DM
- Never pay an onboarding, application, or product fee to become a brand ambassador
- Be skeptical of any deal that immediately asks to move off TikTok to another app
- Request a written contract and confirm the brand's identity through its official verified account first
- Never front your own money for a promised reimbursement-plus-bonus arrangement without a signed agreement
- Search the brand name plus 'TikTok ambassador scam' before engaging further
How to report it
- Report the account or message using TikTok's in-app Report function
- Report to the actual brand being impersonated through its official customer service channel
- Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov if money was sent
- File a complaint with the FBI's IC3 at ic3.gov for financial losses
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok's Creator Marketplace charge creators to join brand deals?
No. TikTok's official Creator Marketplace connects brands and creators without charging creators an upfront fee to participate — any such request is a scam indicator.
Why do these scams often target creators right after a video goes viral?
A sudden spike in views makes creators more receptive to believing a brand has genuinely noticed them, and scammers time their outreach to that window of excitement and reduced skepticism.
