Fake Business Loan & Grant Scam on Facebook
Facebook ads and groups promise guaranteed small business loans or 'free' government grants, then charge upfront fees for financing that never materializes.

Facebook's ad platform and small-business owner groups are frequent hosts for guaranteed-approval loan and grant offers that prey on entrepreneurs struggling to access traditional financing.
How this scam works on Facebook
A Facebook ad or group post advertises a business loan or grant with guaranteed approval regardless of credit history, or claims to offer access to 'unclaimed government grant funds' for small business owners. Interested owners are directed to a form or a private message conversation, where they're told an upfront 'processing fee,' 'insurance fee,' or 'tax prepayment' is required before funds can be released, often payable via gift card, cryptocurrency, or a payment app.
Because the ad or group post often includes fabricated testimonials and sometimes uses a name resembling a real government program or bank, owners under financial pressure are inclined to trust it, especially when the post appears in a group they joined for legitimate small business advice. After the fee is paid, the promised loan or grant never arrives, and the scammer blocks the business owner or deletes the account.
Common red flags
- Guaranteed approval regardless of credit history or business financials
- Any upfront fee required before loan or grant funds are disbursed
- Claims of 'unclaimed government grant money' available to any small business
- Payment requested via gift card, cryptocurrency, or a personal payment app
- The ad or post uses urgency, like a limited-time application window
- No verifiable business registration, physical address, or lender license
How to protect yourself
- Remember that legitimate loans deduct fees from the loan proceeds, not as an upfront out-of-pocket payment
- Search official government grant databases directly (such as Grants.gov in the US) rather than trusting a Facebook ad
- Verify any lender's license through your state's financial regulator or the NMLS Consumer Access registry
- Never pay a loan or grant processing fee via gift card or cryptocurrency
- Research the company name plus 'scam' or 'complaints' before engaging
- Consult a local Small Business Development Center or SCORE mentor for legitimate financing options
How to report it
- Report the ad or post directly through Facebook's 'Report Ad' or 'Report Post' feature
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- Report to the Small Business Administration's Office of Inspector General if a fake SBA program was referenced
- File a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint
Frequently asked questions
Do legitimate government business grants require an upfront fee?
No. Legitimate government grants, such as those listed on official portals, never require an upfront payment to release funds; any such request is a clear sign of fraud.
How can I find real small business grants and loans instead?
Check official sources such as your national government's small business administration website, your local Small Business Development Center, or SCORE mentoring, all of which offer legitimate application guidance at no cost.
