When customers experience billing problems or service outages with their mobile carrier, many turn to YouTube for help. Search results for queries like '[carrier name] customer service' or '[carrier] billing problem fix' often surface unofficial videos — some created by well-intentioned amateur helpers, others by scammers specifically designed to intercept distressed customers.
A video with a professional thumbnail, a carrier logo, and confident instructional delivery can easily be mistaken for official support content, particularly by users who are already frustrated and looking for a quick resolution.
How this scam works on YouTube
Scam videos are optimised to rank for carrier-specific support queries. The video instructs viewers to call a phone number displayed on screen for 'official support'. The number connects to a fraudulent call centre staffed by agents who impersonate carrier representatives and attempt to gather account PINs, billing passwords, or credit card details under the guise of account verification.
Some videos instead direct viewers to download a 'carrier diagnostic tool' that is actually remote desktop software. Once installed, the 'technician' can access the victim's banking apps and cryptocurrency wallets while the viewer believes they are having their phone issue resolved.
Video comments are moderated by the scam operator to remove warnings and preserve a trustworthy appearance.
Common red flags
- Video description or screen provides a phone number as the primary support contact
- Number shown differs from the carrier's official support number found on their website
- Video instructs viewers to download software to fix a phone or account issue

How to protect yourself
- Find your carrier's official support number from the back of your SIM card packaging or the carrier's verified website — never from a YouTube video
- Never download software recommended in a YouTube support video without verifying the tool against the carrier's official app store listing
- Hang up immediately if a support caller asks for your full account PIN, security answer, or card number
- Contact your carrier directly through their official app if you are experiencing account or billing issues
- Check that any support number you call matches the number on your billing statement
How to report it
- Report the YouTube video as a scam using the three-dot menu and selecting 'Report' with 'Scam or fraud' as the reason
- Alert the legitimate carrier through their official social media or customer service so they can report the video
- If you provided account details to a fake number, contact your carrier's fraud department immediately
Frequently asked questions
Does YouTube verify carrier support channels?
No. YouTube does not verify that channels claiming to represent carriers are affiliated with those companies. Always use contact details from the carrier's own website or official app and treat any support number found in a YouTube video as unverified until confirmed.
