Instagram is the platform most associated with celebrity culture, making it the primary venue for celebrity impersonation romance scams. Fans regularly interact with their favourite celebrities through comments and Story replies, establishing a parasocial familiarity that scammers exploit when they impersonate those same celebrities in direct messages.
The visual richness of Instagram profiles — photos, videos, Stories — makes impersonation accounts appear highly convincing with relatively little effort.
How this scam works on Instagram
A fake celebrity account follows or messages a fan after they have interacted with content associated with the celebrity. The initial conversation is warm and personal, referencing shared interests. The fan is asked to keep the contact private to avoid media attention.
Over time the celebrity persona shares personal vulnerabilities — relationship difficulties, trust issues, loneliness — to build reciprocal emotional investment. A financial request follows: charity donations, travel costs, help with a customs situation, or access to an investment platform the celebrity personally endorses.
Some operations run across many fans simultaneously, with the same scripted interactions delivered through a team managing multiple conversations.
Common red flags
- Celebrity makes first contact through DM without any prior direct interaction
- Asks for secrecy about the relationship to protect their public image
- Celebrity shares unexpectedly personal emotional content very early
- Account lacks the blue verified tick or has a slightly different handle from the genuine account
- Financial request is framed as temporary or tied to a cause the celebrity supposedly supports
- The genuine celebrity has a verified account with entirely different posting behaviour
How to protect yourself
- Real celebrities do not initiate romantic or personal relationships with fans through Instagram DMs
- Only interact financially with verified official accounts
- Never send money, gift cards, or crypto to anyone claiming to be a celebrity
- Report impersonation accounts to Instagram using the 'Impersonation' report category
- Confide in a trusted person if you believe a celebrity has contacted you romantically
How to report it
- Report the Instagram account for impersonation using the profile report function
- Alert the genuine celebrity's management or official team through verifiable channels
- File a cybercrime report with your national authority if funds were transferred
Frequently asked questions
How do I tell if a celebrity Instagram DM is genuine?
Check whether the account sending the message is the same verified account the celebrity uses publicly. Real celebrity accounts are marked with a blue verified tick. If the message comes from an unverified account with a similar but different handle, it is an impersonation.
