TikTok's creator culture makes celebrity impersonation particularly dangerous. Fans regularly interact with creators in comment sections and DMs, and the parasocial bonds formed through short-form video content can make a direct message from an apparent celebrity feel like a dream come true rather than an immediate red flag.
Scammers exploit this dynamic by creating accounts that use celebrity names, stolen video clips, and AI-altered content to pass as the real person, particularly targeting younger or more fan-oriented demographics.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok account with a celebrity's name and content slides into a fan's DMs, expressing personal interest. The conversation develops warmly, with the 'celebrity' sharing what feels like intimate behind-the-scenes information. The fan is told this is a secret relationship to avoid media attention.
In time, the celebrity persona requests financial help: a ticket to a show or event they cannot comp, a charity donation only the fan can make, a small personal loan, or access to a private investment platform the celebrity personally uses. Gift cards are a common requested payment method.
Some victims are strung along for months before the nature of the deception becomes clear.
Common red flags
- Account name and aesthetic matches a celebrity but lacks the verified tick or differs from official handles
- Celebrity 'personally' initiates a romantic DM without prior fan interaction
- The relationship is presented as a secret to protect the celebrity from publicity
- Requests for money are framed as temporary or charitable
- Communication moves off TikTok to a personal messaging app quickly
- Video content in the account appears clipped or artificially generated
How to protect yourself
- Only interact with verified accounts for celebrities and public figures
- Know that real celebrities do not initiate romantic relationships with fans through DMs
- Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to anyone claiming to be a celebrity
- Verify official handles through the celebrity's official website or verified accounts on other platforms
- Report impersonation accounts to TikTok immediately
How to report it
- Use TikTok's in-app report feature on the profile page to report impersonation
- Report to your national consumer protection or cybercrime agency
- Contact your bank if any payment was made
Frequently asked questions
Can a TikTok account without a blue tick still be a real celebrity?
Occasionally, but it is rare for major celebrities not to be verified. Any account claiming to be a celebrity but lacking verification and initiating private romantic contact should be treated as an impersonation until proven otherwise.
