Switzerland is home to many globally respected humanitarian organisations, including ICRC, MSF, and numerous Swiss-based foundations. This philanthropic reputation is exploited by fraudulent 'charities' that mimic legitimate Swiss organisations or invent convincing names to collect CHF donations through digital campaigns.
ZEWO (Swiss certification body for charities) certifies legitimate Swiss donation organisations. FINMA and ZEWO have both warned about fraudulent charity appeals, particularly those spiking around natural disasters or humanitarian crises.
How this scam works on Switzerland
An email, Facebook post, or phone solicitation claims to represent a well-known Swiss humanitarian organisation and appeals for emergency CHF donations. The payment link resolves to a convincing lookalike of the real organisation's site.
Other operations invent plausible Swiss charity names with .ch domains and professional layouts, collecting donations via TWINT, PostFinance, or card before disappearing.
Some fraudulent campaigns follow major international crises, launching within hours of news events when genuine charitable impulse is at its peak.
Common red flags
- Charity not listed in ZEWO's register at zewo.ch
- Donation link in a social-media post or email rather than typed official URL
- IBAN or TWINT number provided for donations instead of a ZEWO-standard payment route
- High-pressure urgency: 'donate in the next 24 hours'
- Organisation name is similar to but not exactly matching a known Swiss charity
- No verifiable physical Swiss address or CHE-number (Unternehmens-ID)
How to protect yourself
- Check ZEWO's register at zewo.ch before donating to any Swiss charity
- Donate by typing the official charity URL directly rather than clicking social-media links
- Verify the IBAN against the charity's official site for ZEWO members
- Look for the ZEWO seal on donation appeals — it signals third-party verification
- Be especially careful after major international crises when fake appeals proliferate
- Report suspicious charity appeals to ZEWO and NCSC
How to report it
- Report fake charity appeals to ZEWO at zewo.ch
- Report to NCSC at ncsc.admin.ch
- File a complaint with cantonal police if significant amounts were collected fraudulently

What does the ZEWO seal guarantee?
