Telegram's large subscriber channels and ease of sharing content internationally make it an effective broadcast medium for charity solicitation — both genuine and fraudulent. The platform's prevalence in regions affected by ongoing crises means that messages about disaster or humanitarian need reach audiences already sensitised to such appeals.
The absence of charity verification infrastructure within Telegram means that a channel impersonating a well-known relief organisation is visually indistinguishable from a genuine one to most subscribers. Donors who use Telegram as their primary news source may donate without independently verifying the organisation receiving their money.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel posts emotional imagery and updates about a crisis, with a cryptocurrency wallet address or payment link for donations. The channel name and description mimic a well-known international charity. Over time, more wallet addresses are added for different projects, each representing a separate fraud campaign.
Group chats in regional communities are used to coordinate targeted appeals: a member posts a request for help on behalf of an individual or family, providing a payment link. The account has minimal history and the story cannot be independently verified, but the group setting creates social pressure to contribute.
Recovery scammers also operate on Telegram, targeting people who have already donated to fraudulent causes and offering to help recover funds in exchange for a further fee.
Common red flags
- Channel soliciting donations cannot provide a verifiable charity registration number
- Donation is directed to a cryptocurrency wallet rather than an established charitable giving platform
- Channel was created recently and has no history of activity before the current appeal
- Organisation name is very similar to a well-known charity but not identical
- No transparency updates showing how previously collected funds were used
- Urgency messaging claims donations must arrive within hours to fund an immediate operation
How to protect yourself
- Donate only to organisations with verifiable registrations, using established giving platforms that provide receipts
- Verify any Telegram charity channel against the organisation's official website before donating
- Never send cryptocurrency to a charity wallet provided only through Telegram without independent confirmation
- Check for accountability reports and audited accounts on the organisation's official website
- Report suspicious charity channels to Telegram to protect other potential donors
How to report it
- Forward a message from the channel to @notoscam or report it using the in-app report feature
- Contact the genuine charity being impersonated through their official website so they can issue a warning
- Report to your national charity regulator if a registered organisation's identity is being misused
Frequently asked questions
Is cryptocurrency a reasonable donation method for a legitimate charity?
Some established charities do accept cryptocurrency through verified wallet addresses listed on their official websites. However, a Telegram-only cryptocurrency donation request from an account you cannot independently verify is almost always fraudulent. Always confirm wallet addresses through the organisation's official website before sending.
