Fake Charity Scams via Revolut
How fraudulent fundraising campaigns exploit Revolut's payment links to collect donations from UK and European users for fabricated causes.

Revolut's payment link and tip jar features make it easy for individuals to collect money from a wide network of contacts. Fraudsters exploit this by creating compelling but fabricated charitable campaigns — often tied to a current news event — and sharing Revolut.me links across social media, email, and messaging apps.
The Revolut brand and interface add an impression of legitimacy. Donors who recognise Revolut as a regulated financial service may assume the campaign has been verified, which is not the case — Revolut does not vet the purpose of personal fundraising links.
How this scam works on Revolut
A social-media post or group message presents an urgent cause — a family in crisis, a victim of a fire or flood, a medical emergency — with photographs and an emotional narrative. A Revolut.me link or @username is provided for donations, alongside a request to share widely. The campaign may include a fabricated update tracker showing donations approaching a target.
Some campaigns impersonate real charities by using similar names and imagery to established organisations. Others target the diaspora community by claiming to support families in a victim's country of heritage, exploiting cultural solidarity.
Common red flags
- Donation link is a personal Revolut.me link rather than a verified charity donation page
- Campaign circulated through WhatsApp or social media with no verifiable organisation behind it
- Photographs cannot be independently verified and appear on reverse image search in other contexts
- No charity registration number or tax-relief reference (Gift Aid in the UK)
- Campaign was created very recently, tied to a current news event
- Donation confirmation goes to a personal Revolut balance rather than a business account
How to protect yourself
- Donate to verified charities through their official platforms or registered crowdfunding sites with charity verification
- Search the charity name against the Charity Commission register (charitycommission.gov.uk) for UK charities
- Do not donate via personal Revolut links shared in group messages unless you can independently verify the recipient's identity and the cause
- Reverse image search photographs used in the campaign
- Prefer platforms with donor-protection policies for charitable giving
How to report it
- Report fraudulent Revolut payment links to Revolut at revolut.com/help with the recipient @username
- Report fake charity campaigns to the Charity Commission (UK) at charitycommission.gov.uk
- Report the social-media post to Meta, X/Twitter, or the relevant platform's abuse team
Frequently asked questions
Does Revolut verify what personal fundraising links are used for?
Revolut does not pre-verify the purpose of personal payment links. The responsibility for due diligence rests with the donor. For significant charitable donations, always use the charity's own registered donation page or a platform such as JustGiving or GoFundMe that applies some degree of campaign verification.
