Fake Creator Subscription Scam on Instagram
Scammers run Instagram accounts impersonating adult content creators, luring followers to pay for a 'subscription' that is hosted nowhere and delivers nothing.

Last reviewed: 5 July 2026
Instagram's follower counts, story highlights, and comment engagement give an account an appearance of an established, real following, which scammers exploit by cloning or impersonating a creator's public persona to sell subscriptions that were never theirs to sell.
How this scam works on Instagram
A scam account copies a real or fabricated creator's photos, bio, and posting style, then uses Instagram Stories or DMs to advertise a 'subscription link' promising exclusive content at a discounted rate, often claiming a limited-time promo to create urgency. Because Instagram itself does not host adult subscription content, the link routes off-platform to a page controlled entirely by the scammer, or simply to a payment request with no actual content platform behind it at all.
Followers who pay, typically via a gift card, payment app, or crypto request sent through DM, either receive nothing, are sent a generic set of images unrelated to the promised creator, or are strung along with promises of access 'processing' that never completes. Because the account may have purchased fake followers or engagement to appear legitimate, and because DMs feel like a personal, direct connection to the creator, victims often do not question the arrangement the way they would an unfamiliar website.
Common red flags
- Subscription is offered through a DM link rather than a verified official platform the creator is known to use
- Account is recently created, has inconsistent posting history, or has follower counts that don't match engagement levels
- Payment requested via gift card, crypto, or a payment app with no dispute protection
- Heavy urgency or discount framing ('50% off today only') pushing immediate payment
- No verifiable link to the creator's confirmed official account or website
- Content previews shown are generic or recycled rather than specific to the claimed creator
How to protect yourself
- Only subscribe through a link posted on the creator's verified, established official account
- Cross-check the account against the creator's own linked social profiles before paying anything
- Never pay for a subscription using a gift card or cryptocurrency requested through DM
- Search the creator's name alongside 'scam' or 'fake account' before subscribing to an unfamiliar profile
- Be skeptical of steep discounts or urgency pressure attached to subscription offers
- Report and block impersonating accounts rather than engaging with their offers
How to report it
- Report the impersonating account to Instagram using the built-in impersonation/report tool
- Report the scam to the FTC or your national consumer protection agency if payment was made
- File a report with the FBI's IC3 (ic3.gov) for financial losses
- Alert the real creator, if identifiable, so they can warn their genuine followers
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell a real creator's Instagram from an impersonator?
Check for a verification badge, cross-reference the account against links posted on the creator's known official platforms, and be wary of any account pushing a subscription link exclusively through DMs.
I paid via gift card for a fake subscription — can I get my money back?
Gift card payments are extremely difficult to reverse. Report the gift card numbers to the issuing retailer immediately and file a complaint with consumer protection authorities, though recovery is not guaranteed.
