On Instagram, fake support frequently masquerades as the platform's own help team or a brand's service account. A DM offering to 'recover your account', 'remove a strike', or 'verify your profile' targets users worried about access, a fear the scammer is happy to manufacture.
Instagram is a neutral platform; the fraud lies with impersonating accounts. Scammers exploit anxiety about losing an account and the credibility of an official-looking handle to harvest logins and two-factor codes that let them seize the profile.
How this scam works on Instagram
A DM or comment from a 'support' or 'help centre' account warns that your account is at risk, has a copyright strike, or needs verification, and offers to resolve it. The handle and avatar mimic an official source.
You are directed to a link to 'verify' or asked to share your login, password, or a two-factor code. Doing so hands the scammer your account, which is then used to scam your followers or held for ransom. A 'support fee' may also be demanded.
The threat of losing your account, paired with a seemingly official rescuer, is designed to prompt disclosure before you check the genuine help channels.
